Innovia Systems Polymer Verus Banknote Validators

The Bank of England has announced that the next range of banknotes will be printed on Guardian® substrate Polymer, a thin flexible film rather than traditional cotton paper. The first note to be issued on the new material will be the £5.00 note which will feature Her Majesty the Queen, on one side and Sir Winston Churchill on the reverse, in September 2016. The £5.00 banknote will be followed by the £10 banknote in 2017. It is anticipated that a £20 note will be in circulation by 2020. The new polymer banknotes will be around 15% smaller than they are today.

Polymer banknotes are already used in a large number of countries around the world including Australia, Canada, Malaysia, New Zealand and Romania. Polymer banknotes are more secure, cleaner and more durable than paper banknotes. The Bank of England says that they will deliver enhanced counterfeit resilience, and increase the general quality of banknotes in circulation.

The base material for all Guardian® Polymer banknotes is Clarity™ C Balanced Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BBOPP) film manufactured by Innovia Security. Innovia Systems have introduced the Verus range of devices specifically designed to authenticate Guardian® polymer banknotes. Verus devices can detect the unique physical and optical characteristics of Clarity™ C film. Notes are inserted in to the device and it validates the banknote with a green indicating light and audible alert, and indicates invalid banknotes with a red light. Verus detects and confirm Clarity™ C film, rejecting any unknown or suspicious polymer film types.
